"Wings of Fire" Book Cover

Picture

Design

For this design, I created a fictional book cover.

Contrast: I made the foreground colors bright to contrast with the black background, as well as leaving the sword as a black silhouette to make the red glow behind it more pronounced. I also made the text "Wings of Fire" bigger than the text "The Knighthood" to distinguish the main title of the book from the subtitle.

Repetition: I left the sword as a black silhouette to match the black background and made the glow behind it red to blend with the yellow and orange colors of the three fiery wings. I also made the top and bottom texts the same color and font to connect the title of the book with the books' author and editor.

Alignment:
I positioned the text, the sword and the wings so that everything is center-aligned and pointing downward, starting from the title of the book ("Wings of Fire: The Knighthood") to the author and editor of the book (Galeth Hunt and Robert Frost).

Proximity:
I grouped the main book title with its subtitle together along the top and the name of the author and editor in a separate group along the bottom to convey similar but different clusters of information.

Font Choice:
Main font: Goudy Stout.

Photoshop

First, I created a new Photoshop file (8.5x11) and used the Pen tool to make a V shape. After repeating this step multiple times, I copied the design two times, making three wing-like designs. Next, I created a pattern in a separate file using the offset filter and Spot Healing tool to get rid of any seams. Then, I applied this pattern into my "three wings" design and added a few more strokes of the Spot Healing tool to get rid of a seam that I had missed on my custom pattern. Afterwards, I found a sword image on Pixabay and added a red glow around it, placing it in front of the center fiery wing. Lastly, I added the text for the book title, subtitle, author and editor.
