"Reach for the Stars" Motivational Poster

Picture

Design

I was assigned for my Photoshop class to design an electronic poster as a way to motivate under-privileged students to succeed in applying for college. I envisioned a night sky with a silhouette of a kid leaping for a bright star as a way of motivating students to "reach for the stars." Though I thought of the quote on my own, elements of it have been spoken and written before, so I cannot claim it entirely as my own.

Contrast: I included several examples of contrast in my poster. First,  I chose this image because of the vibrant purple contrasted with the more subdued shades of blue surrounding it. Second, I chose a permanent marker blue font for the words "Reach," "Dream" and "Dare" and made them bigger to contrast them from the rest of the quote. Third, I chose the black silhouette of the boy leaping in the air and made it more transparent to contrast with the bright purple and white glow around him and the nebula in the background.

Repetition: I repeated the purple, blue and white colors throughout the poster: The purple of the glow around the leaping boy silhouette with the purple nebula in the background, the blue of the bolded words "Reach," Dream" and "Dare" with the blue night sky and nebula glow, and the white of the text with the white stars and inner nebula.

Alignment: I placed the text along the left side of the poster to give it a nice left edge and point the viewer's eye towards the right where the image of the nebula is situated. I flipped the nebula image so that its satellite-dish-like shape would point the viewer's eye towards the left at the leaping boy reach for the bright blue star and then back to the left-aligned text. In this way, the viewer's eye would be able to transition back and forth from one side of the poster to the other.

Proximity: I placed the silhouette of the leaping boy closer to the blue star as if he is reaching for it, thus showing in a literal way "reaching for the stars." I also placed the silhouette farther away from the inner core of the nebula (the whiter part) to make it as if the boy were being launched away from the nebula towards the star.

Font Choice: Bigger blue font: Markerfelt Thin.  White font: Myriad Pro.  This was to contrast the "Reach," "Dream" and "Dare" words from the rest of the quote.

Photoshop

First, I created a file 1920 pixels in length and 1080 pixels wide. I searched for a night sky image on Pixabay and found this starry purple and blue nebula image. I flipped it horizontally in Photoshop and wrote my quote along the left side with left-side alignment. Then, I found on Pixabay a silhouette of a boy leaping in the air and placed it a little above the nebula so that it would look as if he was leaping out of the nebula and trying to reach for the bright blue star a little left of the center of the image. I made the silhouette more transparent and added a light purple glow so that it could blend in so that it would look as if the boy were being launched from the nebula towards the star. Lastly, I made the words "Reach" "Dream" and "Dare" bigger and in a felt-tip blue font so that they would stand out from the other text. I also applied the Bevel and Emboss effect on the blue text to make them stand out even more.

Camera Raw

After I had finished my work on the poster in Photoshop, I noticed that I could make the image stand out more. I opened the image in Camera Raw and adjusted the lighting to make the colors a little brighter and more vibrant.
