"Dream Big" Motivational Poster

Picture

Design

I decided to make another motivational poster. This one, I created to practice the Select and Mask and Blend tools in Photoshop.

Contrast: I wanted to make the seal and the bed under it stand out more than the starry background with the fish to create the contrast between the seal in the "real world" and the fish swimming above in the "dream world." I also created a white feathered boarder to contrast with the actual image inside it.

Repetition: I applied a "Color Dodge (add)" blend mode to the fish to make them blend in more with the whiteness of the starry background. The faint yellows and oranges also connect with the light brown and dark red of the seal and bedding behind it. I also made the seal, fish and bed behind the seal have more of a bluish hue to match the starry sky behind them.

Alignment: I made the alignment for the images within the design more of an "upper left to bottom right" progression with the fish being in the upper-left area of the design and the seal in the bottom-right. The design as a whole I designed in the form of a rectangle.

Proximity: I positioned the seal right on top of the bedding to make it look as if it is sleeping on it. I also positioned the fish so that, together, they would create a slanted line from the seal to the text above.

Font Choice: Big font: Goudy Stout.

Photoshop

First, I found on Pixabay an image of a sleeping seal which became my inspiration for the poster design. While in Pixabay, I also found an image of a starry sky, a bed, and fish swimming in the water. I opened each of these files individually in Photoshop and used the Select and Mask tool to isolate the foreground subjects (the seal, the fish and the bed) and placed them where I wanted them within the starry night image. I then used a Curves adjustment layer to make the isolated images have a bluish hue to match the starry sky, but I kept the reddish color of the seal and bedding to match the orange and yellow of the fish in the design. Next, I added a large text across the top saying "Dream Big" and added Bevel and Emboss and Drop Shadow effects. Then, I added a white layer and added a mask so that I could create a white feathery boarder around the composited image to make the design feel more like a dream. Lastly, I noticed that the fish on the far left was distracting me from the text and the rest of the design; so I isolated it using the Quick Selection tool and deleted it from the image.
